Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the trail ride difficult?
The ride will start at the Kimes Ranch in Chester, Arkansas. From there, we will pick up the old wagon road through some
of the most beautiful wooded areas in America. The trails will wind through the mountain canyons with some rocky areas.
You and your horse must be fit to ride this trail. Being fit will help avoid injury and keep both you and your horse safe.
Start preparing early – this is a mountain ride – but not an endurance ride. We consider this about a 5 on a difficulty scale
from 1-10.
2) Can children attend?
Children 12 and over are welcome to ride as long as they are competent riders for the mountain trails. All children must
be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times. No variance to this will be accepted.
3) Does my horse need shoes?
Since it is mountainous terrain, there will be some rocky sections. It is strongly advised you have all four shoes on your
horse. A blacksmith will be on premises if needed.
4) Will there be breaks during the ride?
Breaks are built into the ride schedule. Snacks are provided for the riders at their break. The breaks will be on the trail,
so no port-a-johns will be available. These breaks allow you and your horse to stretch, relax, and will make the ride more
enjoyable. There will be water provided for the horses at key points on the trail.
5) How long does the ride take?
The first day should be about 6 hours. This varies some based on the number of riders and any problems which may occur
on the ride.
6) Can we camp at the Kimes Ranch a day prior to the ride? Is there a charge?
Yes, you are welcome to come and camp on the Kimes Ranch the day before the ride at no charge. Please advise us if you
plan to take advantage of this. There are no tie-up facilities at the Kimes Ranch, so you will need to use your own pen or
tie to your trailer. There are local restaurants available within driving distance. No horses or mules are to be left
unattended.
7) Can we bring pets?
No pets (other than the horses!) are permitted at the Kimes Ranch or on the ride.
8) Can we bring motorized transportation and/or bikes?
No motorized transportation and/or bikes are permitted at the Kimes Ranch or on the trail ride – unless operated by
Mount Royal Trail Ride staff. We will allow the use of golf carts or other such type of vehicle at the concert in the case of
handicapped persons only!
9) Will hay be provided on the trail ride?
Hay will be provided at the camp site on the mountain Friday evening. For your convenience, hay will be available for
purchase for $5.00 per bale at the Kimes Ranch.
10) Can we bring alcoholic beverages on the trail ride?
While riding the horses alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited. During the evening hours, alcoholic beverages are
permitted as long as they are concealed. Drink in moderation and please be discreet.
11) Do we have to carry our camping items on our horse?
Items will be transported by truck to the night camp site and returned the next day to the Kimes Ranch, awaiting your
arrival. All items must be marked or wrapped with masking tape and have your name on each item. Space is limited, so
please be considerate of others. A good way to prepare your smaller items for transport is to use a bucket (which you will
use to feed and water your horse) – put your items inside – cover and tape with masking tape or duct tape. You will need
your tent, sleeping bag, horse brush, horse feed, personal camping items and any personal beverages. Remember to
include any medications you may be taking.
12) Are showers available?
There are no showers on location at Kimes Ranch or the mountain camp site. However, there are two truck stops – one
within 7 minutes driving distance from the Kimes Ranch, and the other within 15 minutes driving time – that offer
showers for a small fee.
13) Do we ride rain or shine?
We hope there is no rain, but the ride will go on unless weather conditions are unsafe for riders or horses. Should there
be a reason to postpone the ride, it will be rescheduled. There are no refunds due to weather conditions or unavailability
to attend the rescheduled date.
